What works for children and young people with literacy difficulties? -(Greg Brookes’ 4th edition) seminal work evaluates literacy support programmes at all levels.


What Works for Children with Mathematical Difficulties? The effectiveness of intervention schemes (2009) -(Ann Dowker – University of Oxford 2009) An excellent study of what works and the results of the research by how much pupils through correct use of particular programmes and materials. Download from the National Numeracy website.

Speech and Language

What Works – log in to access this database hosted by The Communication Trust has worked with the Better Communication Research Programme to develop the What Works database of evidenced interventions to support children’s speech, language and communication. What Works is endorsed by the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.


Effective classroom strategies for closing the gap in educational achievement for children and young people living in poverty, including white working-class boys. – The Centre for Excellence and Outcomes in Children and Young People’s Services (C4EO) identifies and coordinates local, regional and national evidence of ‘what works’, to create a single and comprehensive picture of effective practice in delivering children’s services. This is an excellent digest of the evidence.

Teaching Strategies

The Teaching and Learning Toolkit -from the Education Endowment Foundation. Basically The Sutton Trust findings in an easy to digest format.
